In The Conners' episode “Take This Job and Shove It Twice,” Louise was involved in an attempt to unionize Casa Bonita’s workplace, and the owners closed the restaurant rather than meeting the union’s demands. Once again, The Conners leaned into its brutal reality with a dark, all-too-believable storyline that left Louise with little agency and served as a sobering reminder that the little guy often loses despite the sunny, optimistic outlook of many family sitcoms. However, this plot ended up fleshing out Louise and Jackie’s characters, and the adversity that the two characters faced was more than just a source of misery.
When Jackie reluctantly gave Louise a job at the Lunchbox, Louise soon started inundating her with suggestions on ways to improve the business. Her ideas were successes, giving her new boss no reason to complain until Jackie blurted out that she didn’t want another Roseanne running her life. This scene let The Conners set up Beverly’s impending illness, as a sheepish Jackie admitted that she projected her relationship with Roseanne and her mother onto Louise, while also garnering both laughs and pathos out of Louise and Jackie’s predicament. It was the sort of emotionally charged plot that only works with stakes like the threat of unemployment that aren’t seen in many family sitcoms.
